What is a Pelvic Physical Therapist?

What is a Pelvic Physical Therapist?

American Physical Therapy
Association/Academy of Pelvic Health 2017

Physical therapists (PTs) with specialized training in pelvic health and obstetric physical therapy can benefit a wide range of patients, including women, men, transgender individuals, children, and the elderly, who have various medical conditions. These therapists utilize all aspects of their physical therapy training to assess and treat their diverse clients, promoting and enhancing health throughout their lifespan. Individualized treatment plans are developed after a comprehensive evaluation.

It is essential to note that not all physical therapists have received training in treating conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, pelvic orang prolapse, prenatal and postpartum pain, or lymphedema. In some states, a referral from a primary care physician may be necessary before seeking treatment from a physical therapist..

Addendum: According to New York State law, a prescription for physical therapy services from a licensed physician is required and must be provided to the treating physical therapist after 10 sessions or 30 days of therapy, whichever comes first.

Luba Starostiak, PT has received years of extensive training in Pelvic Physical Therapy, Women's and Men's Health as well as Transgender care. Much of her specialized training was received through the Herman and Wallace Institute.
